Rewriting the Story

We know that you love hearing stories of changed lives! Be encouraged as you read about Amos and John, two young men that we are incredibly proud of!

Amos

Amos was born in Kegonga village, a remote part of Tanzania well-known for its tribal violence and thievery. During the fighting, Amos’ dad was pierced with a poisonous spear, and the medication did not take effect in time before he passed away. His mom did everything she could to provide for Amos, his four brothers, and two sisters by farming and selling vegetables. However, as the fighting grew worse, Amos feared for his life and fled across the border into Kenya. He met a kind woman named Anna who had compassion for him and took him in. One day police from the Immigration Department stopped him. Although Amos had fled to Kenya in fear for his life, he had still entered illegally, and the police had no choice but to deport him. The authorities wanted to make sure Amos was safe upon re-entering Tanzania, and they brought him to City of Hope.

At City of Hope, Amos found safety and security, which allowed him to learn, dream, and heal from the horrors he had faced. During his time at City of Hope, he played on the football (soccer) team, learned to play the keyboard - which he now plays at his church - and completed a school scout development training class.

John

If you met John today, he would likely be singing and would most definitely have a smile on his face. You would never guess that he lost his dad to a car accident, experienced extreme poverty and that his mom was too sick to take care of him and his two sisters.

After struggling to survive, John’s mother reached out to City of Hope and, in 2009, the three children moved to us. John’s two sisters came to the US in 2016 to attend Mountain Mission School in Grundy, VA on full scholarships. Meanwhile, John is excelling at school, learning various trades at the construction sites around campus, and is head of the student council.

A New Hope and a New Narrative

Amos is now studying midwifery. He wants to spend his life helping others and giving them hope!

John wants to go to university and follow in the footsteps of Dr. Chacha by serving God, preaching, and becoming a missionary - and he is doing just that! He wants to spend his life giving back to the community and helped those who are struggling to survive, just like he once was.

Amos and John have faced more hurt and pain than any child should, but there is lasting hope and freedom for them, despite their circumstances.

Thank you for the part that you play in rewriting the stories for young people like Amos and John!
