HopeCo’s Vision: Transformed Lives, Flourishing Communities
On June 26, 2026, family and friends, pastors, mission team members, and HopeCo leadership gathered to remember Hilda Boke Mahare by dedicating Hilda’s Legacy House in honor of her commitment and service as HopeCo’s Kenya Program Director.
Hilda’s Heart for the Hurting
After Hudson Mahare was appointed East Africa Regional Director of HopeCo in 2015, his wife, Hilda, also became involved with the ministry. While teaching school full-time in Kenya, Hilda traveled to City of Hope in Tanzania and mentored the girls on topics like discipleship, leadership, and the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Seeinghow the Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP) in Tanzania gave single and married moms a skill to better provide for their families, passionate to help young moms, Hilda became involved in expanding this program and opened the first Kenya WEP in Kehancha. With her leadership and foresight, she had plans to expand the skills offered to include a beauty school, which opened shortly after her death.
Hilda’s Legacy House, formerly the House of Faraja, was started because of an urgent, unmet need for a safe house for abused and vulnerable girls in Kenya. Hilda was the inspiration behind this endeavor, and in honor of her legacy, HopeCo leadership renamed the House of Faraja to Hilda’s Legacy House, acknowledging her impact, and ensuring the continuation of a safe and restorative environment for young girls rescued from abusive environments.
During and after COVID, Kenya saw a great increase in teen pregnancy and violence towards young girls. Hudson and Hilda began taking a few girls into their own home. In April of 2022, as part of HopeCo, the House of Faraja officially opened with a capacity to safely house 10–12 girls. Ten girls have already experienced healing and been safely reunited with their families. Justice is being served, and perpetrators are serving prison sentences.
