Life-Transforming Youth Camps
HopeCo’s Vision: Transformed Lives, Flourishing Communities
HopeCo exists to...
rescue children in East Africa from abuse, hunger, and exploitation
help them reach their full potential and become leaders and changemakers in their own nations...and
see individuals, families, and whole communities transformed forever by the power of Jesus Christ!
When There Aren’t Any Other Options
The Family Empowerment Center-Machakos (FEC-Machakos) is a refuge to nearly 60 children who rely on the Center for their primary care...because there aren’t other options. And children identified through our Community Outreach Program, that need immediate rescue from abusive or unsafe situations, also find protection and care through this program as well. We provide...
· Regular, nutritious meals
· Educational opportunities (at local schools)
· Homework/tutoring assistance
· Counseling
· Extended care for child-headed families (no parent supervision)
· Christ-centered focus
· Annual Youth Empowerment Camps (Apr/Aug/Dec)
· Advanced Education / Vocational Training Institute opportunities
Most of these children are waiting to be sponsored. (Learn what sponsorship means to a child at JoinHopeCo.com/sponsor-a-child).
Youth Camps Empower Kids
Youth Empowerment Camps are scheduled every April, August, and December at FEC-Machakos. These camps mean so much that some children walk an hour to attend. The weeklong time together provides a much-needed break from rigorous school schedules and difficult home situations. Children look forward to...
· Games, crafts, and fun activities
· Special meals, snacks, and camp party
· Times of extended prayer, worship, and spiritual teaching/preaching
· Morning and afternoon sessions with special speakers (teaching skills and life-enriching topics)
· Spending time with their “brothers and sisters”
A Real Life Transformation Story
After losing his mother at the age of two, Jacob*’s father struggled with alcoholism and adequately providing for him and his seven siblings. For much of his childhood, Jacob was raised at the Center (previously under the management of another nonprofit) until a mandate in 2019 required all the children be transitioned back into extended family care, which frequently proved detrimental. Jacob questioned whether he would be able to complete his secondary education.
Soon after HopeCo acquired the Center (renamed to the Family Empowerment Center-Machakos) in 2023, Jacob attended a Youth Empowerment Camp and committed his life to Christ! This moment marked the beginning of a remarkable transformation for him: renewed hope, a deeper sense of purpose, and an increased focus on the future God had set before him.
During our 2026 April Youth Empowerment Camp, we witnessed significant growth in Jacob’s leadership abilities and spiritual maturity. He confidently led devotions and prayer sessions among his peers, even though he initially arrived feeling discouraged. He shared that the teaching, fellowship, and encouragement he received renewed his determination and strengthened his resolve to continue moving forward. Jacob is currently preparing for his secondary school final exams (Grade 12), and aspires to become an architect.
